What To Look For When Buying A Queen Size Bed

A queen size bed is 60x80 inches in dimensions, with the bed frame slightly bigger to support it. Like most beds, the queen bed features a mattress, a box spring, a head and footboard. A platform queen bed wouldn't have a box spring but only a mattress. The queen bed frame should be strong enough to support the mattress and of course, the buyer of the bed.

The first thing that should be done when considering a queen bed and a bed frame is to measure the size of the bedroom. It would be more than unfortunate if the bed was so large that the owner couldn't move around the room comfortably. There should be at least a foot and a half to two feet of clearance around the bed. The space needs to be there easy access when changing the sheets and to be able to flip and rotate the mattress when the time comes.

The height of the tallest person who'll be sleeping in the bed should also be taken into consideration. A queen bed might be a bit too small for some people who are over six feet tall. The length of a bed should be at least six inches longer than the person who'll be sleeping on it. The queen bed frame should be checked for sturdiness to ensure no creaks or wobbles when in use. This test is one of the most important, considering how much time you will be spending on it. The potential buyer should look under the bed to make sure that the mattress and the box spring are well constructed. If the queen size bed frame is made of metal, the welding should be inspected as well.

A queen bed will likely feature a mattress that is about twenty inches thick and a box spring, unless its a purchase of a platform bed. The box spring is a wooden frame filled with evenly spaced coils or wires. Mattresses and box springs are usually sold as sets and the owner should buy the box spring that goes with the mattress.

The box spring of a queen size bed will have dense fabric around the sides and the top to ensure no loose wires from sticking out. It's best to check the underside of a box spring to see how well constructed it is. The coils should be evenly distributed throughout the area. A good box spring also has corner guards that keep the fabric from wearing away when it rubs against the bed frame.

The best way to test a queen mattress is to simply lie on it. When visiting a mattress store, the salesmen (or saleswoman) will encourage you to test the beds out because honestly they know the bed test is crucial part of their sales technique. When laying down, keep in mind that the mattress should support all of the body and keep the spine in alignment. Another thing the consider, is to purchase a firmer mattress because it will naturally soften over time. As for the box spring, the seams should be tight and straight. The quilting should be firm. There should be no fraying and the handles should be strong enough to safely turn the mattress.
